The American Eagle gold bullion 1 oz coin is a 22 karat gold coin produced by the United States Mint. The United States Mint is fully owned by the US Treasury.
Each 2008 1 oz Eagle Gold coin contains 1 troy ounce (31.1 grams) of fine gold. The gross weight of the coin is 1.0909 ounces or 33.927 grams, and the gold content is 91.67% with the remaining metal comprising an alloy of silver and copper that is added for durability.
The obverse of the American Eagle gold coin features a stylized design of the goddess Liberty, holding a torch and an olive branch, walking towards the viewer against the rays of the sun. The goddess is encircled by the word ‘LIBERTY’, with the coin’s year of manufacture, 2008, to the right. This Liberty design was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and first appeared on the famous double-eagle gold coin in 1907.
The reverse of the gold Eagle coin features a design showing a family of Eagles and the words “E PLURIBUS UNIM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST”. This design was created by US sculptor Miley Tucker-Frost.
The 1 oz American Eagle gold bullion coin has a Diameter of 32.7 mm and a thickness of 2.87 mm, and is a non-circulating legal tender coin with a nominal face value of 50 US dollars.
US Gold Eagle coins were first issued in 1986 and were specifically authorized by the US Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. Their issuance is specifically authorized by the US Treasury Secretary. The US Government therefore guarantees the purity and authenticity of every gold Eagle coin produced.
